Example: 7 hours 45 minutes in decimal hours
- Divide the minutes by 60: 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75.
- Add the whole hours: 7 + 0.75 = 7.75 decimal hours.
- In minutes: 7 × 60 + 45 = 465 minutes.
- Back again: take the decimal part, 0.75 × 60 = 45 minutes, so 7.75 hours is 7:45.
Result: 7:45 = 7.75 hours = 465 minutes.
How the decimal hours converter works
The converter has three fields: hours and minutes, decimal hours and minutes. Type into any field and the other two show the same time in their unit. Convert 7:45 to decimal hours, 7.8 hours back to hours and minutes, or 465 minutes to hours. The hours and minutes field also accepts 7h 45m and 7h45.
Three rules cover every conversion:
- Minutes to decimal hours: minutes ÷ 60. Example: 90 ÷ 60 = 1.5.
- Decimal hours to minutes: hours × 60. Example: 2.25 × 60 = 135.
- Hours and minutes to decimal hours: whole hours + minutes ÷ 60. Example: 7:45 = 7 + 45 ÷ 60 = 7.75.
Decimal to time: hours and minutes from decimal hours
To turn decimal hours back into time, keep the whole hours and multiply the decimal part by 60: 6.4 hours is 6 hours and 0.4 × 60 = 24 minutes, so 6:24. Type the decimal hours into the converter and the hours and minutes field shows the time.
Why payroll uses decimal hours
Hours and minutes count in sixties, so you cannot multiply them by an hourly rate directly. Timesheets, payroll software and invoices therefore use decimal hours: 8.25 hours × $18.00 = $148.50. The common mistake is to read the minutes as decimals. 8:25 is 8.42 hours, not 8.25, and 8.25 hours is 8:15.
Many time clocks also record time in tenths of an hour (6-minute steps): 0.1 hours is 6 minutes, 0.5 hours is 30 minutes. If you need to add up working hours first, use the hours calculator for a single day or the time card calculator for a week; both show the total in decimal hours as well.

The number before the decimal point is the hours. Multiply the part after it by 60 to get the minutes: 7.8 hours is 7 hours and 0.8 × 60 = 48 minutes, so 7:48.

After a colon come minutes (60 per hour), after a decimal point come hundredths of an hour. 7:45 is 7.75 hours. Paying 7.45 × $20 gives $149.00 instead of the correct $155.00 (7.75 × $20), $6.00 too little.

The chart rounds to two decimal places: 20 minutes is exactly 0.333… hours and shows as 0.33. When you add up a timesheet, total the minutes first and convert once at the end; the converter shows up to four decimal places when needed.
