About horacalc

horacalc is an independent project: free time calculators that show their working, with no sign-up.

Why horacalc exists

There are plenty of hours calculators, but many make you pick times from drop-down lists, split one job across several pages or never show how they got the answer. horacalc tries to do better:

  • You type times the way you write them: 7:30 AM, 730a or 19:30.
  • Every calculator comes with a worked example done by hand, and the time calculator shows its working line by line.
  • Results can be shared as a link, downloaded as a CSV file and printed or saved as a PDF.
  • Pages load fast and work on a phone.

How the calculators calculate and are tested

All calculators share one calculation engine. It counts in whole seconds and whole calendar days, so rounding errors cannot build up; results are only rounded for display, or when you choose to round time clock punches. Every function of the engine has automated tests, including edge cases such as shifts past midnight, leap years, holidays that fall on a weekend and overtime split between daily and weekly limits. The worked example on each page is also checked by an automated test that compares it with what the calculator shows.

Legal figures, such as overtime after 40 hours a week at 1.5 times the regular rate under the federal Fair Labor Standards Act, appear as defaults that you can change, with a link to the source. The pages describe how the calculator applies a rule; they are not legal, payroll or tax advice, and state law, contracts or union agreements can differ. US federal holidays and the bank holidays of England and Wales come from the open-source library date-holidays, whose data is licensed under CC BY 3.0. State holidays are not included.

Your data

The calculators run entirely in your browser. What you type is not sent to horacalc: it stays on your device so it is still there on your next visit. horacalc itself does not use cookies. The details are in the privacy policy.
