Example: business days in November 2026 (US)
- Calendar days, counting both the first and the last day: November has 30 days.
- Weekdays: Nov 1 to Nov 28 are 4 full weeks with 5 weekdays each (20). Nov 29 is a Sunday and Nov 30 a Monday, so the month has 20 + 1 = 21 weekdays.
- Federal holidays on weekdays in November: Veterans Day (Wednesday, Nov 11) and Thanksgiving Day (Thursday, Nov 26). 21 − 2 = 19.
- With UK (England & Wales) holidays there is no bank holiday in November, so the same month has 21 working days.
Result: 19 business days in the US (21 in England & Wales) out of 30 calendar days.

Counted Monday to Friday, without the public holidays that fall on those days.
How the business days calculator works
The calculator has two modes:
- Count days: enter a start date and an end date to get the calendar days, the business days (Monday to Friday without holidays) and the span in weeks and days. Holidays that fall in the period are listed under the result.
- Date ± days: enter a date and a number of days to add or subtract. Choose calendar days or business days. This answers questions like “what date is 10 business days from today?” or “when was 30 days ago?”
Dates are typed as month/day/year, like 11/30/2026, or as 2026-11-30. The Today button fills in the current date. Pick the holiday calendar under Region: US federal holidays or England & Wales bank holidays.
Counting business days by hand
- Count the calendar days. Subtract the dates. Add 1 if both the first and the last day count.
- Remove the weekends. Every full week has 5 weekdays. For the days left over, check which ones are Saturday or Sunday.
- Remove holidays on weekdays. A holiday on a Saturday or Sunday is already gone with the weekend. In the US and UK it is usually moved to a weekday instead (observed or substitute day), which the calculator includes.
In the example above, November 2026 has 30 days, 21 of them weekdays. Removing the federal holidays on weekdays leaves 19 US business days.
Add days to a date
In Date ± days mode, pick Calendar days to count every day or Business days to skip weekends and holidays. 30 calendar days from Oct 28, 2026 is Nov 27, 2026; 30 business days (US) from the same date land later, because weekends, Veterans Day and Thanksgiving are skipped. Use a minus to count back, for example to find the date 90 days ago.
Business days and deadlines
Shipping estimates, bank transfers, notice periods and many contracts are counted in business days. Two details often decide the answer:
- Does the first day count? When you add business days, the calculator starts counting on the next business day, as most deadlines do. If day 1 should be the start date itself, subtract one.
- Which holidays apply? A bank in New York and a company in London close on different days. Federal holidays are not automatically state or company holidays, so check the rules that apply to your deadline.
The calculator shows how it counts and is not legal advice. For court and filing deadlines, follow the rules of the court or agency.
US federal holidays and UK bank holidays
The United States has 11 federal holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday (Presidents’ Day), Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Columbus Day, Veterans Day, Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day. England and Wales have 8 bank holidays: New Year’s Day, Good Friday, Easter Monday, the early May bank holiday, the spring bank holiday, the summer bank holiday, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. The tables below list this year’s dates and the number of business days in each month.
For working hours rather than days, use the hours calculator or the time card calculator.

FAQ
What counts as a business day?
A business day is a weekday, Monday to Friday, that is not a public holiday. Saturdays, Sundays and the holidays of the selected region are skipped. Banks, courts and shipping carriers follow the same idea, though each may observe a slightly different list.
Which holidays does the calculator use?
For the United States, the 11 federal holidays, including the observed day when a holiday falls on a weekend (a Saturday holiday is observed on Friday, a Sunday holiday on Monday). For the UK, the bank holidays of England and Wales, including substitute days. State holidays and Scottish or Northern Irish bank holidays are not included.
Should I count the start date and the end date?
It depends on the question. Days “between” two dates usually leave one end out: Jan 1 to Dec 31, 2026 is 364 days. To count every day in the range, such as days of a project, tick “Count both the first and last day” and you get 365.
How do I add business days to a date?
Choose “Date ± days”, enter the start date and the number of days, and pick business days. The start date itself is not counted: 10 business days after Wednesday, Oct 28, 2026 is Thursday, Nov 12, 2026, with weekends and federal holidays skipped.
How many business days are in a year?
A year has 260 or 261 weekdays (262 in a few leap years). Minus the federal holidays that fall on weekdays, the US usually has 250 or 251 business days. The table below shows the exact count for each month of this year, for the US and for England & Wales.
Do time zones or daylight saving time change the result?
No. The calculator counts whole calendar days, so time zones and the clock change have no effect.
