- Military time
- 1600
- 24-hour clock
- 16:00
- Standard time
- 4:00 PM
Example: 1600 and 0930 in standard time
- Split 1600 into hours and minutes: 16 hours, 00 minutes.
- 16 is 12 or more, so it is PM. Subtract 12 from the hours: 16 − 12 = 4. 1600 is 4:00 PM.
- 0930: 09 hours is less than 12, so it is AM and stays as it is. 0930 is 9:30 AM.
- Back the other way, add 12 to PM hours from 1 PM to 11 PM: 4:00 PM is 4 + 12 = 16, so 1600.
Result: 1600 = 4:00 PM, and 0930 = 9:30 AM.

How to use the military time converter and calculator
Type into either field. Enter military time like 1600, 0930 or 2400, or a standard time like 4:00 PM, 4pm or 4:30p, and the other field converts as you type. The result also shows the time on the 24-hour clock with a colon (16:00). The converter accepts military time with or without a colon (1600 or 16:00), with only the hour (16), and with the word “hours” (1600 hours).
How military time works
Military time numbers the hours of the day from 00 to 23, so there is no AM or PM and every time of day has exactly one name. It is written as four digits without a colon: the first two are the hours, the last two the minutes.
- From 0000 to 1159 (midnight to 11:59 AM): the hours are the same as on the 12-hour clock, except that midnight is 00. 0700 is 7:00 AM.
- 1200 to 1259: noon and the hour after it, 12:00 PM to 12:59 PM.
- From 1300 to 2359 (1:00 PM to 11:59 PM): subtract 12 from the hours. 1830 is 6:30 PM; 2215 is 10:15 PM.
To go from standard time to military time, keep AM hours (with a leading zero) and add 12 to PM hours from 1 to 11. The minutes never change. Midnight is 0000 at the start of the day; 2400 is sometimes used for midnight at the end of a day, for example for a shift or a deadline that ends “at 2400.”
How to say military time
Military time is read in hundreds: 1600 is “sixteen hundred,” 0900 is “zero nine hundred” (or “oh nine hundred”), and 1430 is “fourteen thirty.” The word “hours” is often added, as in “sixteen hundred hours.” Minutes under 10 are read with “oh”: 0805 is “zero eight oh five.”
Military time and work hours
Hospitals, the military, aviation and many shift schedules use the 24-hour clock because it avoids AM/PM mix-ups. It also makes durations easier: from 0700 to 1530 is 15:30 − 7:00 = 8 h 30 m. This page converts times; to calculate with military time, such as adding up hours across shifts, use the time calculator; for a shift with breaks, use the hours calculator, which accepts times like 1600 and 4:00 PM alike.
The chart below lists every full hour. For times with minutes, keep the minutes as they are: 1645 is 4:45 PM.

FAQ
What time is 1600 in military time?
1600 is 4:00 PM. Take the first two digits (16) and subtract 12, because they are 12 or more: 16 − 12 = 4, so 4 PM. It is said “sixteen hundred” or “sixteen hundred hours.”
How do I convert PM times to military time?
Add 12 to the hour from 1:00 PM to 11:59 PM and drop the colon: 7:45 PM is 19 and 45 minutes, so 1945. Noon stays 1200. For AM times, keep the hour and add a leading zero if needed: 8:05 AM is 0805.
Is midnight 0000 or 2400?
Both are used. 0000 is midnight at the start of a day, and 2400 is midnight at the end of the day, the same moment as 0000 of the next day. A shift from 1600 to 2400 ends exactly at midnight.
What is 12:00 AM in military time?
12:00 AM (midnight) is 0000, and 12:30 AM is 0030. 12:00 PM (noon) is 1200. The hour 12 is the one exception to the “add 12 for PM” rule.
Do you write a colon in military time?
Usually not: military time is written as four digits, 1600, and the 24-hour clock with a colon is written 16:00. Both mean the same time, and the converter accepts either one.
